When my kids were in kindergarten, this is the song they sang every day : “It’s a beautiful day just to be alive. It’s a beautiful day, I’m so glad that I get to share it with YOU!” This annoyingly perky song ran through my head over and over, all day long. I joked one day about “the dreaded song” with the kindergarten teacher – how could she possibly stand to hear it so often? She is actually quite possibly the kindest and most patient human being on the planet and she told me simply that every day IS a beautiful day in kindergarten. It took me by surprise that she actually believed it! But when I thought about it – it was true. Kindergarten is magical. You sing fun songs. The rooms are brightly colored and happy. You get a special snack. You get to be creative and paint or color or just ride a tricycle. What’s not to love?
So, I have decided to make January all about kindergarten days. I am seeking new and fun recipes for comfort meals for my family. I am seeking out new places to try to eat. I am attempting (note ATTEMPTING) to view all of the Oscar nominated films this year so I can feel educated in my opinions on Oscar night. I will put on the fireplace, flowers on the table, actually SET the table, play fun music, etc. I will do whatever takes to take the “blah” out of January, even if it means riding a tricycle!
As a cooking instructor, I was always telling my classes that eating is not just about sustenance but the experience as well. And I guess in some ways, it relates back to making every day a beautiful day or maybe just a little more special. I would tell my students to drink their bubble water in a wine glass. Eat your meals on the nice china – what are you saving it for? Pack yourself a gourmet lunch to take to work. Buy a new recipe book and find something new to try every week. Because in the mundane world of work, eat, sleep, we need to find the joy in our everyday lives. And if we learn to do that, every day WILL be a beautiful day, indeed.
Happy January and as always, enjoy!
